honda civic spark plug gap chart

Spark Plug Gap setting is important for proper engine operation. For reference, see our spark plug gap chart below, this chart converts metric measurements to standard. The very most important rule when checking or adjusting spark plug gap is, to never pry, apply or exert any force on the spark plug center electrode, or center electrode ceramic insulator.

The spark plug gap adjustment should not be changed more than 3 times and should not exceed. Excessive changing of the spark plug gap setting will result in weakening of the spark plug ground electrode and can lead to breakage.

Also, the spark plug gap should never exceed. Most Brisk and other manufacturer sparkplugs are preset to around 0.

If your spark plug part number has no trailing digits then for most part numbers it will be preset to this specification. If there are trailing numbers after the part number, then the gap should be specifically set as per the manufacturer's part code designation e.

Part numbering for Brisk, NGK and Denso spark plugs is reasonably logical with the trailing digits transposing directly into size in mm. For Champion spark plugs it is a little less logical and is as listed below:. Spark Plug Gap - understanding the basics.

Spark plug gap is where spark plug spark discharge is designed to take place. On a conventional spark plug, it is the area between the center and the ground electrode. As the spark always follow the path of least resistance, spark gap is generally the closest point between the spark plug center electrode and the spark plug ground electrode which is sometimes formed by the spark plug shell itself. The only case when the spark will travel longer path to the ground, is when the longer path is more conductive provides less resistance.

This can be caused for example by loss of insulating property of ceramic due to conductive carbon build up from the combustion process spark plug fouling. Large spark plug gap setting demands higher voltage electrical pressure for spark to jump the large distance gap.

That means that there is higher voltage build up in the ignition system ignition coil, distributor, ignition wires prior to the spark discharge. This is generally desired in applications with late model high output ignition coils and lower compression naturally aspirated engine applications where cylinder pressures are relatively low and easy for spark discharge to occur. However running a large gap in high cylinder pressure application which makes it very hard for spark to occurwill demand such a high voltage electrical pressure for spark to jump the spark plug gap, that the spark will find an easier way to the ground, possibly where the igniton wire is close to the ground engine block etc In either way the spark will not occur between the spark plug electrodes inside the combustion chamber, and engine misfire will occur.

That reason is why high power vehicles 1, horspower and more often run a spark plug gap as small as. Some applications such as ProMod turbo cars using M1 fuel frequently run a spark plug gap as small as. Sometimes customers wonder, why there is so many different spark plug gap firing configurations. The reason is, that in order to get the best possible performance, the spark plugs have to be carefully matched with the appropriate application and intended use.

The like to be "experts" often say that there is no difference in spark plugs, and that the mixture either gets ignited or not. They can not be further from the truth! Mounted on the crankshaft is a trigger wheel that has many teeth, as the crankshaft spins, this wheel inducts a pulse when each tooth passes the sensor.

If every cylinder generates exactly the same amount of power, than the time between each pulse is in the same pattern. However if one cylinder produces slightly less power, the time between the corresponding pulse is slightly increased.

There can be a lot of power gained by using an optimal spark plug for given application, as well as installing a fresh set of spark plugs. It is not uncommon to gain as much as 20 Hp just by replacing used spark plugs. Used spark plugs are hard to fire as the gaps are worn out, and insulation properties of the ceramic is compromised by solid combustion deposits and old fuel saturation. Think of a worn out spark plug gap like an old leaky water hose that requires more water pressure, and is like a restricting the flow at the end with your finger.

More pressure is required form the leaky hose, because more water leaks out at other places than the hose end. There are many different spark plug gap styles available, some with low gap capacitancesome with high gap capacitance, some with low ignition voltage requirementsome with high ignition voltage requirement, some with projected tip, some with retracted tip, some with fixed gapsome with adjustable spark plug gap, some with several parallel gapssome with several gaps in series.Honda manufactures a variety of outdoor lawn equipment including smaller lawnmowers that are suitable for use by homeowners with small- to medium-sized lawns.

The gap on a spark plug is the distance between the small electrode in the bottom of the plug and the ground electrode. The gap between the ground electrode and center electrode is an important part of the combustion process in the mower engine. The distance between the electrodes must be properly set, or gapped, so that the fuel is properly combusted.

A plug that is not gapped correctly can potentially result in the fuel mixture being ignited too early or result in excessive fouling of the plug. Either scenario will result in the mower not operating as designed. The gap on the spark plug in a small Honda mower should be checked after about every hours of operation.

Removing the spark plug from the Honda mower engine is the first step in gaining access to the plug. The mower should be parked on a flat and level work surface like a driveway or garage floor. To disconnect the spark plug wire from the tip of the spark plug, grasp the rubber boot on the end of the spark plug wire and pull out and away from the tip of the spark plug.

A spark plug wrench or socket wrench and spark plug socket is used to loosen and remove the spark plug from the mower engine. Once the plug is out of the engine, take few minutes to look it over for signs of damage to the ceramic or heavy scorching on the electrodes. If there are signs of damage, purchase a replacement plug.

The gap, or distance between the electrodes, should be between 0. Check the gap with a gap gauge and adjust the ground electrode until the gap falls between the two numbers.

Once the spark plug is properly checked and gapped, it is now ready to be inserted back into the Honda mower. It is important to line up the threads on the spark plug with the threads on the mower correctly.

Thread the plug into the mower with your fingers and tighten by hand.

Finish tightening the spark plug in place with the spark plug wrench or socket wrench and socket. Attaching the spark plug wire to the tip of the spark plug is the final step. Simply place the rubber boot on the end of the spark plug and push it firmly onto the tip of the spark plug.Log In or Create Account Optional. Log Into My Account. The OEM spark plugs in this Civic 2. The first steps are to open the hood and then locate the four black metal bolts on the plastic engine cover.

There is one bolt near each of the four corners of the plastic cover. Set the cover aside in a safe place along with the four black metal bolts. Push in the release tab on on the electrical connector before sliding it straight off the base of the ignition coil housing. I recommend only checking or changing one spark plug at a time to help further reduce the risk of having a foreign object fall down into the cylinder.

I found it easiest to attach a short extension bar to my socket and ratchet to get some clearance above the ignition coil. Once the bolt is loose, spin it out the rest of the way by hand to help prevent from having fall down into the engine bay and possibly become lost. Set the bolt aside in a safe place. Lift the ignition coil straight out of the spark plug well and set it aside in a safe place.

If the DTC diagnostic trouble code is related to the ignition coils such as P, P, P, P or P, you may need to replace a failing or faulty ignition coil module. You could also try checking and cleaning the electrical connector. I like to use some painter's tape to secure the socket to the extension bar to help prevent it from popping off and being stuck down in the spark plug well.

Lower the socket into the well and push it on to the top of the old spark plug. Loosen the old spark plug by turning it in the counterclockwise direction. If you have trouble loosening the old spark plug, try spraying a small amount of penetrating oil such as Liquid Wrench, PB Blaster or even WD down into the well. Allow the penetrating oil to work down into the threads for at least 5 to 10 minutes. Try to avoid using excessive force, the old spark plug should break free relatively easily.

If you live in a very cold climate or close to corrosive salt water, you could try warming up the engine or allowing the penetrating oil to seep in for an hour or two.

Do not use an excessive amount of penetrating oil. Spin out the old spark plug the rest of the way by hand. Lift the old plug out of the well and remove it from the socket.

If the old plug is covered in oil, soot or black powder, the engine might be burning oil and should be checked by a professional mechanic. On the other hand, if the old plug is covered in white powder and appears discolored, the engine may have been subjected to over heating and you should have the cooling system checked.

I would recommend returning the plug and exchanging it for a new one. Most iridium plugs should not have their gap adjusted by the consumer. If you have a spark plug gap gaugedouble check the gap on the new spark plugs. Your socket should have a rubber insert or a magnet in it to securely hold the new plug into place. Try to avoid hitting the electrode tip against the top of the engine or the walls of the spark plug well.

Spin in the new spark plug by hand by just using the extension bar.

Do not attach the ratchet at this point. Continue spinning the spark plug in the clockwise direction until it is finger tight with just the extension bar. If you are installing a new spark plug, tighten it to just a fraction of a turn past the point when you feel the new crush washer collapse. Why don't fictional characters say "goodbye" when they hang up a phone? Set the bolt aside in a safe place. Lower the socket in to the well and attach it to the top of the old spark plug. If you can't loosen the old spark plug, do not use excessive force to avoid cracking the ceramic portion of the plug.

Spray a small amount of penetrating oil such as PB Blaster, Liquid Wrench or Kano Kroil and wait at least 15 minutes or more before attempting to loosen it again. If you don't have any penetrating oil, try spraying some WD or warm up the engine for a few minutes to help expand the metal engine block. Once the old spark plug is loose, detach the ratcheting wrench and spin it out the rest of the way using the extension bar.

Carefully lift the socket out of the spark plug well. Inspect the old spark plug to check for abnormalities. If the electrode end of the old spark plug looks ashy white, the plugs may have been exposed to high temperatures such as overheating or they are the incorrect heat range for your driving conditions or environment.

On the other hand, if the old spark plugs are dark grey or covered in black soot, the engine may be burning oil and should be checked by a professional mechanic. An optional step is to apply some anti-seize grease to the threads on the spark plug.

Most spark plug manufacturers recommend that you not use anti-seize grease since it can lead to over tightening. Some mechanics believe that using anti-seize grease on the spark plugs will help prevent them from becoming stuck or "frozen" in to the cylinder head if they are not removed again formiles.

If you have a spark plug gap gauge, check that the new spark plugs are gapped to. Your spark plug socket should have a rubber insert or a strong magnet to securely hold the plug in place.

Lower the spark plug down in to the well and spin it in by hand in the clockwise direction with the extension bar until it makes contact with the cylinder head. If you are re-installing the old spark plug, tighten it to just barely past hand tight.

Do not over tighten the spark plugs to prevent from cracking the ceramic body or stripping the aluminum threads. Double check that the new spark plug is tight before moving on to the next steps. The dielectric grease will help keep out moisture and debris. Lower the ignition coil down in to the well and over the new spark plug. Rotate the ignition coil back and forth a few times to help spread the dielectric grease. Re-insert the 10mm bolt and spin it in by hand a few turns to prevent it from becoming cross threaded.

Push the power plug on to the ignition coil until it clicks securely in to place. Double check that the ignition coil bolts and the electrical connectors are secure.

Thread starter solidus Start date Jul 11, Looking for some aftermarket spark plugs for my car. If you have any knowledge please lemme know.

I need colder plugs if anybody has the part number that'd be awesome!! S North east Car s civic si sedan, civic si coupe. Unless you are running a bigger turbo or highly modified, there's no need for colder plugs.

Well then explain the dry fouling on my plugs then? I took it to my mechanic that has worked on all my cars this being my daily.

Java code test online

He and I both came to the conclusion that colder plugs would be better. I thought it was quite strange for it to go into limp mode misfire and almost make me crash. I'm running a tune at 24 psi with intercooler CAI and catback running 93 octane. No I am not running lean I only have 6 thousand miles on this bitch. Last edited: Jul 11, Custom tune not base calibration.

Hmmm and maybe but I don't think so. Had it tested and tuned several times to ensure it was running at optimal lvls. I trust my tuner he is very reputable.
